BERNINA EXPRESS: On the Red Train from Italy to Switzerland

One of the most scenic railway routes in the world, the Bernina Express offers breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps - from glistening glaciers to mirror (sometimes frozen) lakes! It was early December when I took this trip, and I absolutely felt lucky because although I initially didn’t plan nor intend to visit Switzerland, everything seemed to fall into place - barely any wind, ample sun and visibility, not crowded at this this time of year, and need I say more about the views that made it ever so peaceful and serene!

I was already coming from Milan, so I boarded the Bernina Express from Tirano - this little town in Northern Italy, with its small church, Chiesa di Santa Perpetua, overlooking from the hills. The journey itself is a huge highlight of the experience because the train ride starts you off with some initial views of the Swiss Alps, and as you go along, everything just becomes more and more beautiful.

My favorite spot on the route was Lago Bianco, which is around Grissons, and well, there are no words or photos that can do justice to these snowy mountain reflections of my dreams! The lake was almost fully frozen given the season that I visited, and reflected on the ice were the mountains on the backdrop where the sun was peaking from were covered in snow.

The train ride ends in St. Moritz where I spent a lovely weekend. And if I thought that the spectacular views were over, then I was definitely mistaken. Lake Saint Moritz was a highlight of that weekend, especially during sunset. I had compared it to Macbook wallpapers as it was giving me that vibe!
