One of the most scenic railway routes in the world, the Bernina Express offers breathtaking views of the Swiss Alps - from glistening glaciers to mirror (sometimes frozen) lakes! It was early December when I took this trip, and I absolutely felt lucky because although I initially didn’t plan nor intend to visit Switzerland, everything seemed to fall into place - barely any wind, ample sun and visibility, not crowded at this this time of year, and need I say more about the views that made it ever so peaceful and serene!

I was already coming from Milan, so I boarded the Bernina Express from Tirano - this little town in Northern Italy, with its small church, Chiesa di Santa Perpetua, overlooking from the hills. The journey itself is a huge highlight of the experience because the train ride starts you off with some initial views of the Swiss Alps, and as you go along, everything just becomes more and more beautiful.

My favorite spot on the route was Lago Bianco, which is around Grissons, and well, there are no words or photos that can do justice to these snowy mountain reflections of my dreams! The lake was almost fully frozen given the season that I visited, and reflected on the ice were the mountains on the backdrop where the sun was peaking from were covered in snow.

The train ride ends in St. Moritz where I spent a lovely weekend. And if I thought that the spectacular views were over, then I was definitely mistaken. Lake Saint Moritz was a highlight of that weekend, especially during sunset. I had compared it to Macbook wallpapers as it was giving me that vibe!

From pizza and pasta to Pompei - Naples was only a stopover for me during my last trip to Italy, but this time I had to explore the city a little bit more!

The Amalfi Coast welcomed me with jewel-box towns clinging to high cliffs, and the town in itself was just stunning.

Walking around really made me think that I never would have thought I'd be able to visit such post-card towns, but there I was! I also went into a beautiful cliffside lemon grove overlooking the sea where I was able to try some limoncello. Aside from that, I also picked up a gelato or two while strolling on the streets!

From Amalfi town, I headed to the smallneighboring fishing village of Positano where I had a nice seafood lunch, and then a relaxing afternoon at the beach after lots of walking. Check out a 1-minute video of the highlights of my trip:

Venice was my first taste of Italy, and luckily, it did not disappoint. I’ve been told by many that there are a lot more places in Italy that are better overall, but that just made me want to explore the country even more.

Getting around, a fun and effective way would be taking the vaporetto or the water bus. A transportation ticket that’s valid for 24 hours will cost you around 20 EUR, and will be very useful if you want to get around the city a lot for a day. However, if that’s not enough, there are also other passes for 2-7 days, all of which you can find here.

Riding the water bus will not only get you to your destination, but will also allow you to see the Grand Canal and its surroundings. From the ride, you can get down on the stop at Rialto Bridge where you can do some shopping by the market or book a gondola ride around the canal. You can also join the many people who are taking photos by the top of the bridge.

From there, you can walk the labyrinth of streets and alleys to get to Piazza San Marco. There you’ll find Saint Mark’s Basilica that boasts of its incredible detail and Italo-Byzantine architecture. The Doge's Palace is also in the same area, as well as the Columns of San Marco and San Todaro.
